What a Night - JAM and Turnagain Finish in Downpour
by Race Committee, July 20th, 2014
As predicted, the remnants of Tropical Storm Wali came ashore on Maui. What we did not need was for the heavy rain to pound just as boats were finishing. JAM and Turnagain finished just after midnight in wet, but light conditions. Then the squall hit.
The waiting families and Greeting Party were soaked to the skin in the tropical downpour. And because of the risk of grounding on a falling tide, JAM had to quickly guzzle a mai tain and high-tail it out of the harbour to a mooring buoy in a blustery southwester. Not pleasant.
But both boats reported that the race went very well with crews in high spirits and enjoying every minute (I did not remind them of the 2 days of calms off the California coast) and very little in the way of damaged gear and sails.
The party was still going on at the Pioneer at 3 am when I left to get some sleep before Alegria arrives.
