Vic-Maui Begins
by Ed Watson, July 1st, 2010
Grey skies but sunny dispositions marked the first start of the 2010 Victoria to Maui Yacht Race. Light winds kept the boats close to the Victoria waterfront longer than desired as crew members watched for the forcast westerlies to fill in. The four boats in Class 2 leave Victoria two days earlier than the rest of the fleet. The other boats are faster and a staggered start means the entire fleet reaches Hawaii at about the same time. But arrivals are many days away, first the boats have to get out of Juan de Fuca Strait. Strong tides and adverse winds always make that a challenge.
