One Day to Go
by Ed Watson, June 30th, 2010
By now, even veterans of previous races are feeling some butterflies in their stomachs. Everyone gets pre-race jitters to some degree. In a world of predictable urban living an ocean going sailing race can hold plenty of excitement, and despite all the preparations no one knows exactly what’s going to happen. With one day left before the first start of the 2010 Victoria to Maui Yacht race crew members are busy with last minute chores; provisioning, inspections, and even catching up on sleep. Once the race begins so does the watch keeping. Different skippers have different systems of keeping watch, but a portion of the crew is always awake. The race begins off the Victoria waterfront at 10am on Canada Day. The start can be watched from Beacon Hill Park.
